Atalanta forward Kamaldeen Sulemana will miss at least two months of the 2025-26 season after sustaining a serious knee injury, a blow that arrives just as la Dea prepare for their Conference League play-off campaign against Hapoel Tel-Aviv.
The timing is particularly damaging. Atalanta open their European play-off at home in Bergamo on 20 August, with the return leg scheduled for 27 August, and Raffaele Palladino's side will navigate both legs without one of their attacking options. A squad already managing depth — El Bilal Touré has recently departed for Parma — now carries a more visible gap in the forward line.
Sulemana's absence also invites a harder look at what the 24-year-old had contributed before the injury. Across 25 Serie A appearances last season, the Ghanaian registered two goals and one assist, averaging a rating of 6.70. Those numbers reflect a player who occupied the periphery of Atalanta's attacking output rather than its centre — present, occasionally decisive, but not yet the consistent force his potential suggests. An AI assessment of 66 out of 100 with a potential ceiling of 75 tells a similar story: the ceiling is meaningful, but the gap between current output and that ceiling remains real.
That gap now has a two-month minimum added to it. Pre-season had offered Sulemana a chance to press his case under Palladino, and Atalanta's 3-0 friendly win against Schalke 04 — decided by Gianluca Scamacca, Lazar Samardzic, and the returning Charles De Ketelaere — showed the competition for attacking minutes is not standing still in his absence.
Palladino will need to redistribute those minutes. Atalanta finished the 2025-26 Serie A season seventh, on 59 points from 38 matches, with 51 goals scored across the campaign. That attacking return was functional rather than prolific, and losing Sulemana for the opening stretch of the new season narrows the options further, particularly in wide or transitional roles where his profile is most useful.
The knee injury does not define Sulemana's Atalanta tenure, but it does defer the question of whether he can convert potential into consistent Serie A impact. He will need to answer it from scratch when he returns.
