Cagliari forward Gennaro Borrelli is set to leave Sardinia on a temporary basis, with Çaykur Rizespor his destination as the 26-year-old departs the rossoblù on loan. The move crystallises what has been a difficult opening to the 2026-27 season for both player and club.

The timing is pointed. Cagliari have just been eliminated from the Coppa Italia, beaten at home by Hellas Verona — a result that leaves Fabio Pisacane's side with only their Serie A campaign to focus on. Borrelli's departure removes a forward option at precisely the moment the squad might have expected to consolidate depth, though his own numbers this season gave Pisacane little reason to resist the exit.

In Serie A, Borrelli has managed one appearance without a goal or an assist, carrying an average match rating of 6.30. His single Coppa Italia outing — not for Cagliari in Serie A, and therefore a separate competition context — also produced nothing in the final third. An AI overall rating of 70 out of 100, with a potential assessed at the same ceiling, suggests a player who has largely reached his developmental plateau without quite establishing himself as a reliable top-flight contributor.

The loan to Çaykur Rizespor offers Borrelli something Cagliari could not guarantee him: regular minutes.
